simple and sweet monthly baby photo ideas

At some point in recent history, taking monthly photos of your baby became a 'thing.' You know what I'm talking about - a time consuming and pressure filled decision that many moms experience mom-guilt about. I think this is madness!  We have enough things to stress about don't you think?

I'm a huge fan of documenting your little ones and I think monthly photos are adorable, but I think there has to be an easier (and cheaper) way to go about this rather than spending hours staging a perfect photo with expensive props that get thrown out when you are done. Keeping it simple should be the focus of these photos because let's face it, you are tired and baby's don't always cooperate with our best laid plans. This is why I'm sharing my favorite simple, free (or very inexpensive) ways to take monthly baby photos.

1.  Use what you have (wherever you are) and get creative - Using props from around the house, you create the number of your baby's age. The examples below are fantastic because the photos have the same aesthetic, but are all different and reflect the stage you are at or the interests of your child. Notice that the photos are consistent with baby in a diaper and on the left side of the number, but each month is unique. What I love most about this idea is it's FREE!

2.  Add text to your photos digitally using free software - if you don't already know about Picmonkey, let me fill you in. This website helps you edit photos and add fun graphics and text over your photos. The best part is it couldn't be easier and again, this is FREE! Adding fun details about your baby specific to the month of the photo is a great way to remember all of the amazing things they are doing at that stage. Images below via: @hampton24 on Instagram.

3.  Use a calendar - Do a quick search on Pinterest for 'free printable calendar' and you will see how many options there are. Print the pages on 8.5"x11" sheets at home and voila! A cute, free way to document your baby throughout their first year. We think @ourlittlephotodiary did a fantastic job of this and added a bit of detail with simple accessories. She also circled the day on the calendar that the photo was taken which is so smart.

4.  Printables - Kardz Kouture Monthly Photo Printables are available on Etsy and come in pink or grey. You get 13 8"x10" monthly signs via instant download that you can print at home or send to a print shop to print. The options are limitless for how you use these to take monthly photos. You can lay these down on a blanket beside baby or frame them and sit them beside baby in a cute chair. When you purchase this listing, you are buying a digital file for $10 CAD.  I love the design and think that this is great value because you can use them for siblings down the road as well.
